ABOUT PHOTOSCENOGRAPHY

Photoscenography is an ongoing research 'meta' project investigating the relationship between photography and scenography, undertaken by academic and lighting practitioner Dr Nick Hunt, based at the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance, UK. The project has multiple elements, loosely interlinked, each of which approach the intersection of photography and scenography from a different perspective.

I have given presentations about aspects of the project to the Scenography Working Group of IFTR in São Paulo (2017) and Belgrade (2018), and exhibited images at Rose Bruford College's annual Symposium (2015). You can learn more about my ideas on the relationship between scenography and photography in this video presentation for the 2020 Connections conference, CONNECTIONS: EXPLORING HERITAGE, ARCHITECTURE, CITIES, ART, MEDIA.

The project and this website is in ongoing development. To find out more, contact me via the contact page.

ABOUT ME

The first part of my professional career was as a theatre lighting technician and designer, before I started teaching on the Lighting Design degree programme at Rose Bruford College. After a period as Head of the School of Design, Management and Technical Arts, responsible for ten degree programmes across the various aspects of theatre and live performance production, I am now the College's Digital Research and Innovation Fellow.

As well as the relationship between photography and scenography, my research interests include the performative nature of stage lighting, digital scenography and digital performance, the history of theatre lighting, and the roles and status of the various personnel involved in theatre-making. I am an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Performance Arts & Digital Media, and a past co-convenor of the IFTR Scenography Working Group and the TaPRA Scenography Working Group. You can find more information about my research on my Academia.edu page, as well as on my personal website.

I have extensive experience as a consultant and external examiner in the areas of design and technical theatre, working for universities and higher education institutions including Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Wimbledon College of Art, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Leeds University, Edgehill University, LASALLE College of the Arts Singapore, and the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.
